Plan interior lighting around the way you use the room

A useful lighting plan starts with what happens in a room. Reading, cooking, working and relaxing require different visual conditions, and the same room may need to support several of them. Consider light sources, daylight and controls together so the result works at different times. Decorative fixtures are one part of that plan.

Map activities and the surfaces they use

Mark where people read, prepare food, work, apply makeup or move through the space. Note whether the layout is changing. A light placed for the current arrangement may be poorly positioned after furniture moves. Include the height and location of the relevant surface, and identify anything that can cast a shadow or create glare. These observations make a lighting conversation more precise.

Think in layers with a purpose for each

General light helps people navigate. Task light supports a specific activity. Accent or decorative light can draw attention to a feature or shape the room’s atmosphere. A room does not need every possible fixture type; it needs a clear reason for the sources chosen. Review how they work together and whether one area can be used comfortably without switching on every light.

Consider daylight and how materials respond

Observe the room at different times and photograph where daylight reaches it. Reflective surfaces, dark finishes and glossy materials can change the way light is experienced. Review finish samples alongside the proposed lighting direction. A rendering can explore the atmosphere, but real samples and site observations are still useful when choosing colours, sheens and fixtures.

Plan controls before settling on fixtures

Discuss which lights should operate together and whether dimming or other controls would be useful. Confirm compatibility with the supplier and electrician before purchasing. Natural Resources Canada recommends considering energy-efficient lighting products and appropriate controls. The design discussion can establish the intended experience; the responsible electrical professional should confirm the installation and technical requirements.

  • Switch locations and daily routes
  • Groups of lights used together
  • Dimming needs and product compatibility
  • Access for maintenance and replacement

Write a fixture brief that goes beyond appearance

Record the intended location, function, dimensions, finish and light characteristics needed for each fixture. Check how a pendant relates to the table or island below, how a reading light reaches its task, and whether a fixture can be maintained in its location. Keep the design intent and the electrical installation requirements connected through the people responsible for each.

  • What activity does this light support?
  • Could the position create glare or shadows?
  • How will it be controlled?
  • Who confirms compatibility and installation?

Common questions

Should every light in a room have the same colour temperature?

Start with a coherent lighting intention and compare the sources that will be seen together. Different functions may justify different choices, but mismatches can be distracting. Review product information and samples where possible rather than relying only on screen images.

Does a lighting concept include electrical installation?

A lighting design scope can establish fixture direction, placement intent and controls to discuss. Electrical design requirements, installation and code compliance should be confirmed by the appropriately qualified professionals responsible for the work.
